Just walk away. The time is now

Excerpt from a review of Thomas Greco's book: The End of Money and the Future of Civilization (Chelsea Green: 2009), by Richard C. Cook:

"...The time is now. There is no more reason to delay. If the people of the world do not join together in this kind of action, they can likely kiss their economic future and perhaps their livelihoods good-bye. The controllers of the world, those with the big money, the ones who run the banking systems, who own the global corporations, and who finance politicians like Obama, the Bushes, and the Clintons, are now poised in their blindness to extinguish the light of democracy on the planet for good.

Greco is implying that the power of the elite is not only dated but illusory. Thus the way to proceed is not just to oppose them. If they are opposed, they’ll do what they always do, which is to roll out the SWAT teams, the military in the streets, the tear gas, the sound cannon, the concentration camps, the Patriot Acts, the torture chambers, because that is all they know, and it’s what they do best.

The money monopoly translates into a monopoly on violence on an ascending scale. We know that the U.S. sells more weapons abroad than any other nation, and we know that it is war above all that makes the bankers rich.

So let them have their weapons and wars. With all due respect to those brave enough to protest, it’s time for people simply to walk away and set up their own economic and monetary systems as a prelude to a rebirth of humanity as ethical beings in sustainable communities of choice.
The keys, says Greco, are simple: “Promote the establishment of private complementary exchange systems – and use them. Buy from your friends and neighbors wherever possible. Contribute your time, energy, and money to whatever moves things in the right direction.”

Greco also recommends that the unit of exchange for alternative currencies be based on the value of commodities – not necessarily gold or silver, which bankers and governments manipulate, but those commodities readily available within a trading system. State and local governments should do everything possible to protect, encourage, nourish, and participate in these systems.

The irony is that what may appear on the surface to be technical changes in how the exchange of goods and services takes place can have such profound effects. The answer is that systems of exchange reflect entirely different perceptions of the world. Bank-money exchange reflects and creates a system of elite control and human slavery. Reciprocal credit exchange reflects and creates a democratic system on a level monetary playing field.

The difference points to the fact that such reform is, above all, a spiritual endeavor. Thomas Greco has devoted decades to this quest and is one of its foremost visionaries. In an Epilogue he writes: “We will either learn to put aside sectarian differences, to recognize all life as one life, to cooperate in sharing earth’s bounty, and yield control to a higher power – or we will find ourselves embroiled in ever-more destructive conflicts that will leave the planet in ruins and avail only the meanest form of existence for the few, if any, who survive.”

It’s a vision we can all strive to embrace."

Silvio Berlusconi kisses Tony Blair (Thierry Chesnot/Reuters)

The former Prime Minister has enjoyed the Italian leader’s hospitality

London Times | Oct 15, 2009

by Lucy Bannerman in Rome

Tony Blair can count on the support of at least one old ally as he manoeuvres himself to become the first president of Europe.

Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, found time out from his political battles to write a front-page letter in a right-wing newspaper, declaring his former holiday companion to be the best man for the job.

“Tony Blair has got everything it needs to become the first president of the European Council,” he wrote in Il Foglio. “He has everything it needs to be designated to that role, as soon as it will be judicially and politically possible . . . In agreement with many other heads of government, and heads of state, and in co-ordination with the powers of the European Parliament, my Government and I will work to ensure we do not lose a great political legacy, made with courage, equilibrium and prudence without uncertainty.”

Mr Blair’s appointment, he added, would renew the governance of the European Union.

The Italian leader has made no secret of his support for Mr Blair to win the historic role, created under the Lisbon treaty.

A summit in Brussels was due to name the new president, and also the foreign minister, at the end of the month but the path has since been blocked by President Klaus of the Czech Republic, who refuses to put the final signature to the document, which has been ratified by the rest of the EU member states.

Mr Berlusconi was one of Mr Blair’s key allies over the Iraq war, during the days of the Bush Administration. He also played a memorable role in their Italian holidays, treating the Blairs to his legendary hospitality during a visit to his villa in Sardinia in 2004.

Because he was recovering from a hair transplant at the time he also treated the world’s press to photographs of a world leader in a bandana. Cherie Blair later spoke of the impressive festivities held in her husband’s honour, including live music and a fireworks display that spelt out the words “Viva Tony”.

Mr Berlusconi also made a personal call to the head of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, to put in a good word for the former British Prime Minister, according to Il Foglio, a Milanese daily, whose largest stakeholder is Mr Berlusconi’s estranged wife, Veronica Lario, and whose editor is Giuliano Ferraro, a former spokesman in his first Government. Mr Barroso, a Portuguese conservative, is strongly supported by Britain and was appointed in 2004, thanks largely to Mr Blair.

The Irish bookmaker Paddy Power said this week that Mr Blair was the 4-6 favourite, followed by the Dutch Prime Minister, Jan Peter Balkenende (4-1); the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Jean-Claude Juncker (11-2); and the Danish Nato chief, Anders Fogh Rasmussen (6-1).

Mr Berlusconi, 73, who faces a series of criminal trials after a court stripped him of his immunity from prosecution last week, was removed from the running after his odds reached 100-1.

US spends $1 million per soldier in Afghanistan, government report says

Imperialism can be pretty expensive, but it's the only business left in town. I think that they could have hired for life the whole Afghan population and bought peacefully the whole country with a fraction of the trillions spent in this failure. Italians understood this long time ago, but they forgot to advice their allies.

Rawstory: The monthly cost of the US presence in Afghanistan isn't quite as much as the planned 2009 bonuses at Goldman Sachs.

At $3.6 billion a month, however, the annual total does exceed the firm's planned $23 billion in bonuses for the year.

That's the taxpayer toll of the US war in Afghanistan according to the Congressional Research Service, which released their findings on Wednesday.

More telling, perhaps, is the per-soldier calculation the group revealed -- the amount spent for each US soldier now costs American taxpayers $1,000,000 a year. The average was calculated based on the current US troop load in Afghanistan of 51,000 soldiers.

The total boots on the ground of American forces is expected to rise with a fresh complement of servicemembers authorized by President Barack Obama, at 68,000; the number could go yet higher if Obama approves requests from generals in the field. Pentagon leaders are calling for as many as 40,000 additional troops.

Also notable in the Congressional report is that the US is spending just $12,000 for each Afghani soldier, as opposed to the $1 million is spends per American servicemember, according to Steve Daggett, a researcher with the Congressional Research Service cited by the D.C.-based newspaper, The Hill.

Ultimate bunker buster: U.S military speed plans for 13-ton bomb... but deny Iran nuclear standoff is the reason

Oh yes. 15 tons bombs might always come handy for anything else

13 Oct 2009
The U.S. military is speeding up delivery of a colossal bomb designed to destroy hidden weapons bunkers buried underground and shielded by 10,000 pounds of reinforced concrete.
Call it Plan B for dealing with Iran, which recently revealed a long-suspected nuclear site deep inside a mountain near the holy city of Qom.
The 15-ton behemoth -- called the 'massive ordnance penetrator,' or MOP -- will be the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal and will carry 5,300 pounds of explosives. Read all
