Gaspare Spatuzza, a mafia turncoat, told a court in Italy that the Sicilian Cosa Nostra had done a deal with Mr Berlusconi in the early 1990s.
Berlusconi became Italian Prime Minister in 1994.

Berlusconi has been accused of paying a $600,000 bribe to his British former tax accountant, David Mills, the husband of Tessa Jowell, the UK cabinet minister and friend of Blair.

Spatuzza has alleged that Berlusconi provided support for bombings by the mafia, in 1993, in Rome, Florence and Milan.Spatuzza has told of a meeting with alleged mafia godfather, Giuseppe Graviano, in a café in Rome in 1994.

According to Spatuzza, "Graviano told me we had obtained everything."Senator Marcello Dell’Utri, a close political pal of Berlusconi, was convicted in 2004 of association with the mafia. He has yet to serve any time in jail.

On 17 February 2009, UK government minister Tessa Jowell's husband David Mills was sentenced to four and a half years jail in Italy for corruption. Mills was also fined €250,000 by a court in Milan for taking a bribe from Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to give false evidence in two corruption trials. Prosecutors said Mills used the money on a joint mortgage with Tessa Jowell to obtain a property in north London. Mills is unlikely to go to jail as the case will go before two appeal courts and that has to be before February 2010, otherwise it passes the deadline for Italy's Statute of Limitations. In the summer of 2002 Mills talked to Baroness Symons, then a Foreign Office minister, about his interests in Iran. According to The Observer: He was trying to broker a $200m deal to sell aircraft to Iran but the problem was that the US had strict sanctions prohibiting this. Mills explained the difficulty to his wife's colleague. Symons asked him to drop her a letter - a copy of which was leaked last January and revealed how Symons had given him advice on proceeding with the deal. The Observer has now obtained the original letter which Mills wrote to Symons on 9 July 2002, 10 days after the Oxford dinner.
Mills wrote: 'Dear Liz... I am sure HMG [government] will wish to offer such support as it can to smooth the path with our American friends... 'The ministerial code states that ministers must declare to their permanent secretary the financial interests of their spouses if they could appear to be a potential conflict of interest. At the time Mills, who had travelled to Tehran, confirmed that he had discussed his Iranian work with Jowell, so she was aware of it. When contacted by The Observer in May 2003 about the original potentially sanctions-busting deal, Mills initially claimed that Jowell's permanent secretary had been informed, but he later admitted that this was not the case.

5. In 1996, Mills set up banking arrangements to handle payments in a GBP 300 million military contract for the Ukraine to sell 320 tanks to Pakistan.
It was in the early 1980s, that Mills was put in charge of creating a complex web of offshore companies on behalf of Italian prime minister Berlusconi. These companies were in tax havens such as Panama. Berlusconi, allegedly used these companies to evade tax, bribe judges and make illegal payments to footballers. 7. After Blair won the 1997 general election, he made Jowell his public health minister. According to The Observer ( How the lawyer's pub deal brewed a storm of trouble ): At the time Jowell was involved in discussions with the drinks industry about a range of issues from relaxing drinking regulations to alcopops. She was also working on a white paper about the future of tobacco use that would see the government back away from banning smoking in pubs...
Documents obtained by The Observer reveal that on 8 February 1998, Mills used a company based in the British Virgin Islands to buy 90,895 shares in a little-known firm called the Old Monk Company...The Old Monk Company is involved with pubs and drink. Mills pumped £80,000 into the company... Reportedly the shares were sold, on 3 September 1999, for £147,977.

Assuming the detailed evidence collected by the Italian prosecutor is accurate, this suggests that in a space of just 18 months while his wife was public health minister, Mills had turned a profit of £67,000 - a return of more than 80 per cent... Opponents are likely to seize on this as an apparent conflict of interest that should have been declared.

The Observer article continues: Within 18 months the Labour Party would be trying to secure votes at the 2001 General Election by sending out text messages to students saying: 'Cdnt give a XXXX 4 lst ordrs? Then vote Labour for extra time.' After Labour was returned to power, Jowell was promoted to Culture Secretary with the job of driving through the new drinking laws.

8. Jowell is to face questions over how she secured crucial Italian support for the 2012 London Games. According to the Independent newspaper, sources from various cities in the 2012 bid said that powerful International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Mario Pescante, who as Italian Sports Minister was answerable to Berlusconi, became a surprise convert to London after initially backing it’s main rival Paris. The source said, “we were astounded and perplexed by his support for London. There was a belief that Berlusconi would virtually order Mr. Pescante to back London”. In November 1997, it emerged that the British Government was trying to protect Formula 1 racing from an EU-wide ban. Mr Mills was both legal adviser to and a former director of Benetton Formula 1. His wife, as Minister for Public Health, was responsible for government policy on smoking. It emerged that the Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone had secretly donated £1m to Labour funds. Italian prosecutors began searching for the money trails leading to and from Silvio Berlusconi. Mills gave evidence at Berlusconi's two trials, in 1997 and 1998.

10. Reportedly, Mills is linked to a corrupt land deal involving a convicted criminal. Italian prosecutors are reported to have discovered that Mr Mills was the administrator of a company registered in the Isle of Man that bought into the deal in the port of Salerno in 1992.
The chief beneficiary, Diego Attanasio, was jailed for bribing officials to ensure the deal went through, and is now appealing against his sentence.
This would mean, according to Mr Mills' current account of his affairs and according to Ms Jowell's statement last week to Sir Gus O'Donnell, the cabinet secretary, that their London home was paid for, in part, by a convicted criminal.

Of the rest, $600,000 was cycled through financial and legal groups in Gibraltar and Switzerland before being invested in various places including two hedge funds, Giano Capital and Torrey Global Offshore. The remaining $400,000, they said, was diverted to bank accounts controlled by Mr Mills and still under investigation...

While browsing an online forum I came across a very interesting thread where the posters had done some research on the media.What the posters have found is that in the board of directors of some of the 6 corporations that own most of the media, some names appear over and over again; some of them also appear in the board of directors of some very large banks and other financial institutions; some are on the boards of large oil companies, and have relationships with some of the highest people in government, and some are members of the Council on Foreign Relations.

In 2007 Pakistani Intelligence traced the source of much of terror in Pakistan to a 'terrorist' camp in Helmand province in Afghanistan. The camp was run by Michael Semple and Mervyn Patterson.

Both of these British spooks were ostensibly working with humanitarian organizations. Following extraordinary intelligence work by ISI, Karzai of Afghanistan and high officials in the Musharraf government exchanged visits which eventually resulted in the arrest and expulsion of Patterson and Semple from Afghanistan.

In December of 2007 Guardian and Independent published stories that were clearly designed to muddle the facts and divert attention away from the real story.

The real story was that these training camps were to create the Pakistan Taliban or Tehreek-e Taliban-e Pakistan (TMP); but why? If the Taliban were to take over some areas in Pakistan and a part of the capital, then this would provide a sufficient basis for the US to bomb Pakistani nuclear installations and cease their nuclear weapons. There were serious war plans and military exercises conducted by US forces for this scenario.

On 19 October 2009, it was treported that the Pakistan Taliban (TTP) leaders were being evacuated by mysterious airlifts "Mysterious airlifting of some Taliban elements from areas of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border linking Waziristan have been reported by several sources and fears are growing that anti-Pakistan TTP terrorists are also being rescued by their “foreign allies” from across the border.

"The unexplained movements of “un-marked” helicopters and aircraft have been reported since the last few days along the Pak-Afghan border and one source claimed that they were being transported to the Eastern Afghanistan.

"Some experts believe that secret allies of the friendly-Talibans took the action in order to secure the militants from an assault in South Waziristan by Pakistani Armed Forces while others believe the secret evacuation was part of a larger deal between some Western States and “good Taliban.”

"The airlifting and evacuation of TTP leaders from South Waziristan coincided with a report by foreign news media or a similar mysterious evacuation of “militants” from South Afghanistan to North Afghanistan."

An Iranian news site on October 18 reported that the “British Army has been relocating Taliban insurgents from southern Afghanistan to the north by providing transportation means.”

"Quoting diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Iranian site claimed that insurgents are being airlifted from the southern province of Helmand to the north amid increasing violence in the northern parts of the country."

The PressTV.com also claimed that “the aircraft used for the transfer have been identified as British Chinook helicopters.”"The report suggested that the secret operation was being launched under the supervision of Afghan Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar, who “was still operating under the British guidance.”

"Last week Afghanistan’s Pajhwok news agency reported that “US ambassador scotched speculation that his country was helping terrorists in the north, saying America had nothing to do with the air-dropping of armed men from helicopters in Samangan, Baghlan and Kunduz provinces.”

"At an October 11 news conference in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai had himself claimed that “some unidentified helicopters dropped armed men in the northern provinces at night.”

The devastating book which debunks climate change

"...On every side we are told that 'the science is settled', that '2,500 of the world's top climate scientists' agree that these terrifying predictions will all come true unless we take the most drastic action. So carried away have they all been by this belief that scarcely a single politician dares question it.
Yet the oddest thing which has become increasingly evident in the past year or two is the fact that almost none of these things is happening, certainly not in the way those computer models have been predicting. Although carbon dioxide levels have continued to increase, temperatures have not been rising in the way the computer models all agree they should have done.

In the past decade, the overall trend of temperatures has been not upwards, but down.
The hard evidence tells us that there have actually been fewer major droughts, hurricanes and heatwaves in recent years than there were in earlier decades.
There is no less ice at the Earth's poles today than there was 30 years ago. Sea levels may have been rising very slowly, but no faster than they have been for 200 years.

In other words, as a growing army of genuine experts across the world has been trying to tell us, there is not a single item on the list of apocalyptic predictions we have been fed for so long by the IPCC and the likes of Al Gore which is not being called into question by what is actually happening to the world's climate.

...The greatest myth of all in this story is the claim that the succession of alarmist reports produced by the IPCC represents a 'consensus' of the views of '2,500 of the world's top climate scientists'.

In every way, this is wildly misleading. The vast majority of those who contribute to those IPCC reports are not climate scientists. Many are not scientists at all, but economists or sociologists - even just environmental activists with no scientific qualifications whatever.
The IPCC was never intended to be an impartial body, weighing the evidence for and against man-made global warming and coming up with objective conclusions.
It was set up by a small group of scientists already so firmly committed to the belief in 'human-induced climate change' that they were not prepared to examine any evidence which contradicted it.

A detailed study of the contributors to the most recent IPCC report has shown that the number of scientists responsible for the key chapter on the extent and causes of global warming - on which everything else in the report depended - was not 2,500, but barely 50.

Almost all this handful of scientists were firmly committed to the official view on global warming before they were appointed - and they include those whose leaked emails have now created a shock wave running around the world.
Tellingly, what they also all have in common is that their findings are based on computer models programmed to assume the chief cause of global warming is the rise in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

It is precisely this assumption which more than anything else has been called into question by the fact that global temperatures have not been continuing to rise as the computer models insisted they should.
Even some of the most committed scientific supporters of the global warming theory now admit the warming process has come to a halt - although they insist that in a decade or two it will re- emerge again stronger than ever.
The fact remains that the models on which the whole global warming panic was based have been proved dismally wrong, suggesting that the theory on which they were programmed may itself have been fundamentally flawed.

...Yet on this basis, the world's politicians, led by our own in Britain, are nevertheless proposing the most damaging measures ever put forward in history - cuts in carbon emission which, if implemented, would plunge our world back into the Dark Ages - to meet a crisis which it now seems was never going to happen anyway.
Before it is too late, we must insist our politicians re- examine the increasingly shaky scientific case on which all those proposals are based.
For nearly 20 years, from Al Gore to President Obama, they have been intoning to us that 'the science is settled'. But as ever more scientists from outside the IPCC's self- selected 'magic circle' now maintain, it has never been more obvious that this simply isn't true.

No one has put this better than Professor Lindzen, one of the world's leading climatologists, when he wrote: 'Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early 21st-century's developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally average temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer projections contemplated a roll-back of the industrial age.'

With the entire future of our civilisation at stake, it is no longer good enough for our politicians just to shout 'deniers' and 'flat earthers' at all those genuinely expert scientists now begging them to look properly at the evidence. They must be prepared to listen - and, for the sake of our planet, to think again.

Welcome back in the middle age: absolute majority of Americans in favour of torture

Public opinion about the use of torture remains divided, though the share saying it can at least sometimes be justified has edged upward over the past year.
Currently just over half of Americans say that the use of torture against suspected terrorists in order to gain important information can either often (19%) or sometimes (35%) be justified. This is the first time in over five years of Pew Research polling on this question that a majority has expressed these views. Another 16% say torture can rarely be justified, while 25% say it can never be justified.

...With these new numbers, it's virtually impossible to find a country with as high a percentage of torture supporters as the U.S. has. In Iran, for instance, only 36% believe that torture can be justified in some cases, while 43% believe all torture must be strictly prohibited. Similarly, 66% of Palestinians, 54% of Egyptians, and over 80% of Western Europeans believe torture is always wrong. The U.S. has a far lower percentage than all of those nations of individuals who believe that torture should always be prohibited. At least on the level of the citizenry (as opposed to government), we're basically the leading torture advocacy state in the world.

Adam Serwer says that this is "what happens when one party in a two party system makes something outrageous part of its political platform: Even the most abhorrent behavior can be mainstreamed." That's basically true, but even leaving aside the fact that many Democrats acquiesced to if not outright supported the same polices, this outcome is also attributable to our collective and very bipartisan decision not to investigate and prosecute the torture crimes that were committed.... Trickle-up Economics

Excerpt: "...In a failed state, the government’s priorities are totally separate from those of the people. The US can’t afford health care or a bailout for jobless homeowners, but it can afford a pointless war and multi-million dollar bonuses for banksters who wrecked the economy.

Millions of laid-off workers lost their health insurance subsidies on December 1, the day President Obama announced a $30 billion “surge” in Afghanistan. The expensive “surge” came 24 hours after the Detroit Free Press published a 127-page supplement of home foreclosures in its metro area. In Michigan 48% of mortgages are on properties that are worth less than the loan, according to a report from First American CoreLogic. As bad as it is in Michigan, the state ranks seventh in foreclosures, so six states are in even more dire straits.

Why does President Obama think the US can afford a war in Afghanistan when the US economy is falling apart? Massive joblessness. Massive homelessness. Millions of Americans without medical care. The additional $30 billion for the war comes on top of the $65 billion already appropriated for the year. These appropriations are always fattened with supplementary appropriations. The true cost is well in excess of $100,000,000,000.

Whose going to pay for it? Democratic Representative David Obey, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee proposes to raise income taxes on everyone earning more than $30,000. This is called “trickle-up” economics. You tax the little guy and give the money to the armaments companies.

...On December 3 at the jobs summit with business leaders, Obama said , “We don’t have enough public dollars to fill the hole of private dollars that was created as a consequence of the crisis.”
