Why Washington Hates Hugo Chavez

By MIKE WHITNEY

It's no fun being on Washington's enemies list. Just ask Hugo Chavez. Last week, the Venezuelan president had to cancel a trip to Cuba after he was told that a coup was underway and his life was in danger. The information came from an anonymous source who had delivered a similar warning prior to the failed coup in 2002. The letter said: “The execution phase is accelerating..… There is an agreement between Colombia and the US with two objectives: one is Mauricio and the other is the overthrow of the government.… They will hunt down ‘Mauricio’ (and) try to neutralize part of the Armed Forces.” ("Venezuela Pushes for Peace", Coral Wynter, Green Left News)
“Mauricio” is Chavez's codename. Whoever is behind the coup, wants to kill Chavez.
There's no way of knowing whether Chavez is really in danger or not, but we shouldn't be too surprised if he is. After all, the US claims it has the right to kill anyone it sees as a threat to its national security, and Chavez surely ranks high on its list of threats. So it's wise to be careful. In any event, the warnings coincide with other unsettling developments. At a recent meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), Colombian ministers charged Chavez with harboring guerrillas on Venezuelan territory. (The allegations could be used to justify a preemptive attack) Chavez reacted swiftly and broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia, but the row did not end there. Obama's nominee as US ambassador to Venezuela, Larry Palmer, threw a little gas on the fire by backing-up Colombia's claims. Now the two countries are at loggerheads which seems to be what the Obama administration had in mind from the very beginning. US policy towards Venezuela has changed at all under Obama. If anything, it's gotten worse.

US EXPANDS 7 BASES IN COLOMBIA
The Pentagon recently announced that it plans to expand 7 military bases in Colombia. State Dept officials said that the US merely wants to step up its counter-narcotics operations, but no one's buying it. Everyone knows the US wants to reestablish its control over the region. The military build up in Colombia is another way of ratcheting up the pressure on Chavez and fanning the flames of political instability in the hemisphere. Naturally, the base expansion has the region's leftist leaders worried that Latin America may be headed for another era of US-backed dirty wars.
Also, the internet is abuzz with stories that Obama is planning to deploy warships and ground troops to Costa Rica in the near-future. Here's an article on Alternet that lays out the basic theory:
"Rather than retooling its diplomatic approach to fit the new reality in Latin America, Washington is expanding its military footprint. It is will soon be operating out of seven military bases in Colombia and has reactivated its 4th Fleet, both highly unpopular moves in Latin America. Rather than taking the advice of countries in the region to demilitarize its war on drugs, the U.S. recently announced it is deploying 46 warships and 7,000 soldiers to Costa Rica to “interdict” drug traffic and money laundering." ("Recent Colombian Mass Grave Discovery May Be “False-Positives", Conn Hallinan, Alternet)
Although the rumors have not been verified, the anxiety is growing. The US has never played a constructive role in Latin America's affairs, and the prospect of more meddling and violence is frightening. The truth is, US intervention has continued even during relatively peaceful periods like the last decade. US intelligence agents and NGOs are sprinkled throughout the civilian population gathering information, swaying elections, and fomenting social unrest. Here's a clip from an article titled "America's Covert 'Civil Society Operations: US interference in Venezuela keeps growing" which shows how America's tentacles extend everywhere:
"Foreign intervention is not only executed through military force. The funding of “civil society” groups and media outlets to promote political agendas and influence the “hearts and minds” of the people is one of the more widely used mechanisms by the US government to achieve its strategic objectives. In Venezuela, the US has been supporting anti-Chavez groups for over 8 years, including those that executed the coup d’etat against President Chavez in April 2002. Since then, the funding has increased substantially. A May 2010 report evaluating foreign assistance to political groups in Venezuela, commissioned by the National Endowment for Democracy, revealed that more than $40 million USD annually is channeled to anti-Chavez groups, the majority from US agencies....
A large part of NED funds in Venezuela have been invested in “forming student movements” and “building democratic leadership amongst youth”, from a US perspective and with US values....In the last three years, an opposition student/youth movement has been created with funding from various US and European agencies. More than 32% of USAID funding, for example, has gone to “training youth and students in the use of innovative media technologies to spread political messages and campaigns”, such as on Twitter and Facebook.
NED has also funded several media organizations in Venezuela, to aid in training journalists and designing political messages against the Venezuelan government. ..What these organizations really do is promote anti-Chavez messages on television and in international press, as well as distort and manipulate facts and events in the country in order to negatively portray the Chavez administration... Yet such funding is clearly illegal and a violation of journalist ethics. Foreign government funding of “independent” journalists or media outlets is an act of mass deception, propaganda and a violation of sovereignty. ("America's Covert 'Civil Society Operations: US interference in Venezuela keeps growing", Eva Golinger, Global Research)
It's hard to believe that a two-year senator from Chicago with a background in "community organizing" presides over this elaborate and opaque system of imperial rule. He doesn't, of course. The real leaders remain hidden behind the cloak of democratic government and all of Washington's phony institutions. Obama is merely a public relations hologram, a friendly face that conceals the machinations of a global Mafia. Other people--whoever they may be--control the levers of power moving the pieces as needed to assure the best outcome for themselves and their constituents. Now, it appears this shadow government has its eyes on Latin America once again. That's bad news for Chavez and anyone else who hoped that political instability and US black ops were a thing of the past.

Washington hates Chavez because he's raised living standards for the poor. (and because he won't bow to the giant corporations) That's why he's pilloried in the media, because his socialist model of democracy doesn't jive with America's slash and burn-style of capitalism. Chavez has enacted land and oil industry reform, improved education and provided universal healthcare. He's introduced job training, subsidies to single mothers, drug prevention programs, and assistance for recovering addicts. Venezuelans are more educated than ever before. Illiteracy has been wiped out.
Chavez's policies have reduced ignorance, poverty, and injustice. The list goes on and on. Venezuelans are more engaged in the political process than anytime in the nation's history. That scares Washington. US elites don't want well-informed, empowered people participating in the political process. They believe that task should be left to the venal politicians chosen by corporate bosses and top-hat banksters. That's why Chavez has to go. He's given people hope for a better life.
Movie director, Oliver Stone, summed it up perfectly in a recent interview with Nathan Gardels. He said, "The US remains hostile to anyone on the left coming to power in their "backyard," anyone who thinks the resources of a country belong to its people....For the first time in modern history, much of South America is beyond US control.....It is also beyond the influence of the US-dominated IMF."
The people of Venezuela are better off under Chavez; better fed, better educated, and with better access to medical care. The government safeguards their civil liberties and political activism continues to grow. Democracy is thriving in Venezuela. Hurrah for Hugo Chavez!

Is Obongo messing with the weather???

Vatic Note:   This is one of the very best analysis I have ever read about what we are seeing right now in our breaking news on weather and population impacts.  FOR THE SERIOUS INVESTIGATOR and truth seeker, this is a MUST READ.  Also tie this in with Zbig Brezsinzki's early book written in 1976 when he was newly the NSA manipulator of the Carter administration,  called "Between Two Ages", wherein he broached “the theme of weather control, which he regarded as a form of broader social regulation”.  This observation was made by a Russian Scientist, Dr. Areshev.   Then Zbig writes the Grand Chessboard in 1997, published in 1998 which then ties the original "weather manipulation" into the larger Geostratetic Imperative of the International Banker elite relative to the Eurasian continent, and control of its enormous untapped wealth.   That is Empire building by "Class" rather than "Nation".   Because the international elite cross all borders,  they have no country pre se themselves, even though they have the wealth they have stolen that is the equivalent of a 2nd world country,  they still needed a nation to act as surrogate for them and that is the US Gov and they did it by putting one of their own who is not an American in as President.  VERY CLEVER indeed, so they act through him to empire build, using our wealth and human resources as fodder for their wars to bring other nations into line.  This is not our "people" doing this, its the illegal and illegitimate Government owned and controlled by Rothschild, head of the international bankers.   Zbig is his policy wonk man on these issues.
In the process Zbig makes it clear that while manipulating such weather weapons to control Eurasia,  it was also imperative to absolutely dominate through any means possible, the rest of the globe TO ENSURE NO ONE COULD ARISE TO CHALLANGE THE EMPIRE AGENDA OF THE ELITE who are using the US and her wealth to achieve their global domination of the planet.   Globalization was about forming a government of the ruling elite who have no boundaries,  which would then reflect reality.   No nationalism, no loyalty to a country or a people.  Only complete and total control of the globes massive wealth by a very elite few.  Combine that with Israel's agenda of moving Christians and muslims into a slave cattle workforce for their benefit and you have a perfect storm for this that is happening now.  In that context, all that Dick discusses below begins to make sense as to why this is happening.
The murder of Latin American (world) populations has begun -=- "Starvemageddon" = Clandestine Weather Modification
Commentary by Dick Eastman,  Yakima, Washington, USA
August 9, 2010

Tropical vegetation dies fast in snow and tropical fish die fast in cold water. The extreme cold in South America this season has been caused by prolonged wind from the Antarctic during the southern hemisphere winter.
Is someone behind this?

Winds can be redirected or prevented from modifying direction by controlling high and low pressure by heating or cooling surface regions along side the paths of the wind by creating cloud cover or by steering clear air to locations where heating of the surface is required.

Wind blows anti-clockwise around lows (right hand rule) and clockwise around highs (left hand rule) in the northern hemisphere and the opposite in the southern hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere to create a stream of wind headed north (from Antarctica) over a region of South America arrange for higher pressure to the west and lower pressure to the east of the stream, that is block sunlight to the west and leave sky clear to the east.
This is Clandestine Weather Modification.

Power consumption sets new records

5 Aug 10 - For a second day running it snowed in Southern Brazil and in twelve of Argentina’s 24 provinces including parts of Buenos Aires.

In Argentina the phenomenon extended to Northern provinces (geographically sub-tropical).

In Patagonia and along the Andes snow reached over a metre deep, isolating villages and causing yet undisclosed losses to crops and livestock. Temperatures went as low as minus 10C, even lower in snowy regions. Maximum temps ranged from zero to 7C.

Power consumption set new records in both Argentina and Uruguay, and hundreds of industries suffered blackouts.

In Uruguay the lowest temperatures were registered in the north and west: minus 7C.

In Bolivia, temperatures in tropical areas in the east plummeted to zero causing “millions of dead fish” in rivers that normally flow at 20C.

Santa Cruz governor Ruben Costas said the province was suffering a “major environmental catastrophe” and warned the population not to make use of water from rivers (because of the dead fauna and flora) promising to send drinking water in municipal trucks.

Defender, I just know about the facts I have run across, so can't say anything about your barium idea. BUT I certainly have found reason to support your other idea: "more of the same (or similar), strategic biological/chemical attacks to affect world market? And the band plays on."

I have just discovered powerful corroberation for the clandestine weather modification thesis. Not only does the NSF have the EOS system to collect the necessary real-time data; and the cruching power to process that data fast enough for identify weather interventions timley enough for weather modification (i.e. identify interventions within the limited time frame or "window of control ability" before repeated interactions among
variables sensitive to the "way out" significant figures in the various data makes prediction and control a practical impossibility.)

Now we find that NSF, Carnegie Mellon and a host of other establishment research institutions have been developing and elaborating the specific science that determines the economic effects of weather modification.

Carnegie Mellon in the early 1990's used the ICAM-3 super computer to model the economic and social effects of various factors of storms and other weather events.  They created formulae for determining
how weather events affect economic and sociological variables.

Also in the 1990's the NSF has sponsored modeling of ecological distortion that results from even minor changes in  atomspheric and oceanographic conditions.

If one view weather modification as an instrument then these researches provide the road map, the target, the payoff  (destructive as well as constructive).  The new name the NSF has given this research into the effects of specific weather changes upon the economy, the environment and public health is "The Biocomplexity Initiative."

NSF director, Rita Colwell, the "Alan Greenspan" of strategic scientific information,  identifies the goal of the Biocomplexity Initiative as developing "tools that can help us predict environmental changes" and understand the "ramifications" of "human actions"  on "life-supporting environmental processes."

Most ominous in this mix, is the NSF-supported combined meteorlogical and microbiology research work in
New Mexico, which identifies the invasive paths of infection, for example, the induction of virus outbreaks by wetter- than-normal-early spring or, I might add,  warmer than usual waters in the Indian Ocean.

See
http://www.nsf.gov/  to learn how the Biocomplexity Initiative is seeking to specify the exact conditions
that must obtain to effect the collapse of natural  fishing stocks.
(VN:  now the Gulf begins to make more sense, fish stock depletion, which is brain food, combined with the massive research the Israeli's are doing on brain restructuring, DNA splicing and dicing to change our basic nature as "humans" into a devolved species, and other such "frankenstein" evil horrors, we can only imagine given their history for a total lack of humanity)

I am not saying that the scientists working on the various projects mentioned here are aware that what they are doing may figure destructive clandestine weather modification operations. In fact there is strong reason to believe that there is not.

In fact, under Colwell, government-managed research into interactive natural and human-derived environmental-system interaction, utilizes scientists who have been narrowly focused and fragmented, and puts these researchers who have never collaborated, i.e., who are not part of a dynamic scientific community/culture and uses them for only one year, before cutting them off. None of the researchers ever get the full picture. (It would be a courageous act for such researchers to now step forward and confirm this to an uncertain public.)

One more important and revealing juxtaposition of facts in the public domaine:   The Trilateral Commission is on record as considering major disasters as a means of moving people to consent to limits on democracy and the wide-spread sharing in economic growth and development.

"We have come to recognize that there are potentially desirable limits to economic growth.  There are also potentially desirable limits to th3 indefinite extension of political democracy ... A government which lacks authority .. will have little ability, short of cataclysmic crisis, to impose on its people the sacrifices which may be necessary."
--Report on Governability of Democracies to the Trilateral Commission"

"The Crisis of Democracy, 1975"

But according to Discover Magazine this month (3/2001) Carnegie Mellon has found that "slowly changing environmental conditions" (i.e., the global warming scare) do not motivate people  to address such changes (and respond with acceptance of) important public policy implications."

In other words, it takes CWM-disasters and not "global warming" junk-science half-truth scares to get people to surrender political power and accept smaller shares of global wealth. And, maybe that is what the chemtrails are doing there,  and why humanity is going through environmental hell since the early 1990's.

(More later.)

Rejoice: The Euro Is Dying and There's No Cure

From SeekingAlphaAugust 12, 2010:

A decision by the European Union that forces Germany to include the shortfalls of government-owned banks into its national debt, pushing the debt/GDP ratio to 90% from 79% overnight, is the final straw that will have broken the Euro's back. (Hat tipping Zerohedge who broke this news first in blogosphere and extrapolated what a similar scenario would mean for US.)
It is ironic that the Eurocrats are solely responsible for this. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal,
The bailout of Germany's banking sector may swell the country's public debt rate to 90% of gross domestic product, Die Zeit weekly newspaper reports Wednesday. (NOTE: It is not public but government debt, which makes a big difference for me. Or did you sign one of the risky deals that put us into this mess?)
The weekly based this estimate on a recent decision by Eurostat requiring Germany to include the balance sheets of public-owned bad banks (NOTE: It is government-owned; or did you vote for any of these nationalizations?) - set up to help financial institutions offload toxic and non-strategic assets - into its overall debt ratio.
As Eurostat is the statistical office of the EU it can be expected that all other EU members will have to follow suit, igniting a fresh round of debt growth of government debts.
It is permissible to speculate that Eurostat may have sent such a notice to all EU nations.
So far, only Germany and Austria had to resort to outright nationalizations.
In Germany, which took ownership of WestLB and Hypo Real Estate (HRE) earlier,
state-owned WestLB AG bank has already offloaded €77 billion into such a rescue bank. Going by the Eurostat decision, €54 billion of WestLB's toxic assets transferred to the bad bank must be included in Germany's overall debt level.
Finance ministry spokeswoman, Jeanette Schwamberger, said the "winding-down entity of WestLB has already been included in the government's recently published calculations of the debt level."
In July, it forecast Germany's debt level will rise from 73.1% in 2009 to 79% of GDP in 2010, 80% in 2011, to 80.5% respectively in 2012 and 2013 before easing to 80% in 2014.
Die Zeit said that if nationalized mortgage lender Hypo Real Estate is added to the equation, Germany's debt level could widen to 90%.
However, the impact from Hypo Real Estate is yet unclear because a rescue bank hasn't been set up and it's unknown how big the volume will be, according to Schwamberger.
Hypo Real Estate has said it plans to offload €210 billion into such a bad bank, but has already added that it might need less fresh capital than previously said. A consolidation of assets might reduce the widening of Germany's debt,
The WSJ wrote.
Living in Austria I naturally think first what this will mean for this country (more thoughts on the rest of Europe below) that got wrecked by former chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel under whose "leadership" white-collar crime and corruption has begun to mushroom since 2000. Only today a German paper concluded that nobody gets ever prosecuted as long as he is connected to the government. Austrian observers have been enraged about this for some years. Now the sovereign will be presented with a horrific - and probably un-payable bill.
Austria has nationalized scandal-laden Carinthian Hypo Alpe Adria AG last December. The bank recorded a net loss of €1.6 billion in 2009 but still sits on a portfolio of €7.3 billion non-performing loans and another €7 billion in loans on the watchlist while prosecutors are still combing through the bank's files to find out if there may be still more losses in the offing.
If these €14 billion end up on the governments tab, the debt/GDP ratio will rise some 7 percentage points to more than 73%.

Eurocrats Suicided the Euro

While this may be small fry compared to the big Eurozone countries Eurostat's action may forebode that Austria will have to include the debts of government-owned special entities like debt-laden Austrian railways OeBB and money losing road-builder Asfinag as well. This would drive up Austria's current debt:GDP ratio of 66.5% significantly.

This will also deteriorate Greece's position further when I think of Hellenic Postbank TT.
As all major Eurozone countries have long exceeded the Maastricht criterion that stipulates government debt of no more than 60% in relation to GDP, the death of the Euro, an artificial fiat currency with absolutely no backing behind it, is clearly written on the wall.

And there is no cure for it. We can rather expect more symptoms of terminal illness to emerge once all EU countries have to come up with an unadulterated account of government net debts.

Spain is off the hook for the time being as the problematic Cajas are not formally state-owned - yet. And I guess I will not earn any serious criticism for the claim that spun-out debts will emerge in many more EU countries that will have to be added to government debt again. Parsing the list of Europe's 91 potentially bad banks more losses or accounting irregularities can be realistically expected. Not one of them is in good shape.

All this happens almost exactly 3 years after the beginning of the subprime crisis which has by now swollen into the worst Western financial crisis of all times.

Don't believe into any politician who says that it was necessary to prop up European banks with EU, ECB or government funds.

Banks may be systemically relevant - but certainly not all of them. And this is the core European problem where politicians, scarily eyeing their constitutencies, wanted to save all banks and not let the boom-bust cycle let go its course as is the case in all other industries. There is absolutely no reason why banks should be shielded from their own fallacies.

Sad as it is, this crisis will lead to an even sadder reemergence of nationalism in Europe when every country will look for its own best once it finds out that neither the EU nor the ECB has the money to save it and they will have to scramble for funds on reluctant capital markets.

The ECB may hold its leading interest rate at 1% or even drive it lower, but this will not prevent a surge in government bond yields because it is clear the risk is actually much higher than reflected by current low yields.
Experts have so far overlooked the dichotomy of historically low rates and the real risks one carries by buying government debt. None of them saw the subprime crisis coming either. Never before has there been such a contorted situation that governments pay record-low yields whilst being entangled in the numerically biggest debt crisis in history.

It is an irony that of all people it will have been the Eurocrats of Eurostat that will have suicided the Euro when seeing it from a post-event perspective.

I, for my part, hope to find some sleep after reading a few more pages of This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly, wishing that all responsible officials in Europe would read it too. Otherwise we may be doomed because "Experience shows that man never learned anything from experience".

I was wrong.
How often are you going to see a financial columnist say THAT, eh?
But it's absolutely true. I figured that the Fed would act to prop up Wall Street by buying a billion or so in stock shares.
I didn't like the idea, mind you. In fact, I believe that this sort of active intervention on the part of our central bank is an abomination that completely distorts the psychology of the markets, inducing investors to buy into badly run companies in the sure knowledge that the government will repair their idiocy and fund their profits.
But in the end, the Fed chose to do nothing.
The Real Power on the Street
Well, that's not really accurate. For the past few years, the Fed has been assembling a trillion-dollar portfolio of stocks, bonds and derivatives.
It had already set the target for interbank rates at a red hair above zero, in essence inventing money from scratch and then "lending" that money for free to American banks. The idea was that the banks would mark the money up just a tiny bit and send it directly to American companies, again at almost no cost.
When that didn't serve to get the economy rolling again, the Fed began to invent and deploy "other tools." Specifically, it ginned up a second magic treasure trove of fictional dollars and simply gave it directly to Wall Street, in exchange for a veritable mountain of stocks and bonds.
Well that certainly changed the picture a bit. Over the following months, the U.S. stock market rose some 75%, a rally that only ended when the Fed stopped buying up stocks.

The Other Side of a Bad Coin
I've already mentioned one obvious catch with such interventions. The other side of that coin is that the Fed dare not intimate that things are looking up - that American companies might actually be able to turn a profit on their own - without inducing a massive sell-off.
Indeed, the slightest twitch in statement language has had an inordinate effect on stocks. Come last April, when the Fed began to hint that it might someday shut down this fountain of largesse, the markets reacted by collapsing some 9%, a tumble that only ended when the Fed returned to its promise of zero percent rates for the foreseeable future.
Which brings us to this week, with the economy neither growing nor collapsing outright, core items like houses deflating the dollar and non-core items like food gas and electricity inflating same, and stock shares stuck midway between "a steal at twice the price" and "I wouldn't touch that with a 10-foot pole."
What Comes After Limbo?
For 24 hours, the world held its collective breath while this oh-so-activist Fed board deliberated on what bold course it might chart out next, with the markets and the dollar rising and plunging antipodally as hints and allegations flew about.
And then, the gray men stepped forth and spoke. They conceded to the economy and market's stalemate, and announced that they would do... nothing.
They would not buy additional stocks, but neither would they sell the stocks they are holding as previously hinted. They would not invent more money to buy up additional federal debt, but neither would they retain the payoffs for maturing bonds, instead sending those gains back to Treasury in exchange for modest amounts of additional paper.
The gray men have attained the perfect gray-water compromise: Free marketers like myself continue to despise them for their ongoing ownership of deadbeat American companies and those companies despise them for not helping them more.
Not Heaven, That's for Sure

As I sit to write to you, investors are absolutely fleeing the market, trading stocks for dollars at an astounding rate, collapsing the Dow Industrials some -2.5%, and the Transports more than -4%, and the Financials -3.1%, and spiking the US Dollar Index almost 2%, all the result of Fed "inaction," or perhaps more properly said, continuation of the same ruinous actions.
I somehow doubt that this tactic will last more than 72 hours. If you were to read the FOMC's actual post meeting statement, you would note a singular footnote at the end that warns of a "technical note" to follow shortly that will address "operational details on how (the Fed) will carry out these transactions."
Now I will put my head on the block again, and make yet another prediction. Actually, it's the same prediction as I made earlier this week: When that note arrives, it will somehow contain some kind of contrived language that will allow them to stem this bleeding and funnel additional dollars to Washington's friends on Wall Street.
Maybe I'll be wrong again. It does occasionally happen.
But I doubt it.
Yours truly,
