Libya: NATO Provides the Bombs; The French "Left" Provides the Ideology

by Pierre Lévy
Global Research, October 6, 2011

Last April, former Le Monde diplomatique director Ignacio Ramonet published (in Mémoire des Luttes) a text entitled "Libya, the Just and the Unjust."  The war had been started a few weeks earlier, inaugurated by French aircraft which had the honor of dropping the first bombs on Tripoli.  On March 19, "a wave of pride swept through the Elysée palace," Le Monde reported.  At the time, experts and commentators had no doubt that within a few days or a few weeks at the very most the country would be rid of the "tyrant," thanks to the anticipated popular uprising, facilitated by the aerial nudge from the coalition, aglow in the sage aura of Bernard-Henri Lévy.
To be sure, in his text Ignacio Ramonet took his distance from NATO.  He nevertheless stated from the very outset: "The Libyan insurgents deserve the help of all democrats."  God be praised, certain democrats were not stingy with their help: in five months, more than 15,000 airstrikes delivered several thousand tons of bombs, not to mention the latest generation of missiles, special forces on the ground in the form of instructors -- a gift prohibited in principle, but love is blind.  Only the result counted: Total victory.
The pun is easy but unavoidable, especially since Libération published the letter in which the National Transitional Council (NTC) promised to grant 35% of concessions to the French petroleum giant Total "in exchange" (the term used) for French military engagement (a document which naturally triggered a hasty denial from the Quai d'Orsay).  The fight for freedom is such a noble cause.  The author nevertheless concluded his article by taking note of "the strong odor of petroleum hanging over the whole business."
Indeed.  But nevertheless, his approach was no different from that of all the Western leaders and media.  In particular, he accepted the analysis of the Libyan uprising as an active part of the "Arab spring."  Lumping events together in that way disregards the reality of each separate nation.  And in this case it is even the opposite of the truth.
In Tunisia and then in Egypt, popular movements, which certainly were not identical, did share some important points in common.  In terms of domestic policy, the mobilization saw the convergence of the working classes with what are called the "middle classes" in a movement whose social demands were inseparable from democratic objectives; in each of those two countries, the workers' struggles and strikes of recent years -- harshly repressed -- constituted an essential background for the development of the movement, all in a context of mass poverty.
In terms of foreign policy, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak were unquestionably puppets of the West, of which they were always an integral part, geopolitically, economically, and ideologically.
The Libyan situation was altogether different.  In social terms, to start with, the country was by far the most advanced in Africa according to the Human Development Index (HDI).  In that regard it is striking to consult the statistics provided by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), whether concerning life expectancy (74.5 years -- before the war, that is), the eradication of illiteracy, the status of women, or access to health care and to education.  The standard of living and social protection were very substantially subsidized.  There is no need to belong to the Moammer Kadhafi fan club to recall these facts.
Moreover, by his history, Kadhafi can scarcely be put in the same category as his two former neighbors.  Indeed, Ignacio Ramonet correctly observes that around 2000 he did spur a gradual rapprochement with Western leaders, who ended up rolling out the red carpet for him, business being business.  However, they never considered him "one of the family"; he was always too unpredictable, and above all he never abandoned the "Third Worldist" tone of his discourse, particularly within the African Union in which he played a very special role.
Still, the privatizations and liberalizations undertaken in recent years did not fail to impact on class relations.  A certain category of the population got rich, sometimes very much so, while adopting liberal ideology.  Precisely some of those to whom the "Guide" entrusted the "modernization" of the country and privileged contacts with international high finance (and its university connections, notably in the United States) came around to the idea that, in this context, the historic leader was more of an obstacle than an asset for the completion of the process.  Part of the middle classes and well-to-do youth, especially in Benghazi for historic reasons, therefore constituted a social base for the rebellion -- a rebellion which was armed from the start, not made up of peaceful crowds.
The countless reports and interviews with the "anti-Kadhafi" youth are enlightening.  Le Monde cited those well-to-do young women who shouted "no milk for our children, but arms for our brothers."  A slogan which would probably have astonished the Egyptian demonstrators . . . and which in any case illustrates the absurdity of lumping these events together.
In short, the absence of social demands and even the presence of a demand for "more economic freedom"; (not systematic but nevertheless frequent and now louder) calls for a stricter application of "Islamic law"; NTC leaders closely linked to the Western business world or even trained there; and a movement which was only able to win thanks to NATO bombing -- all that is not exactly what is known as a revolution.  Symbolically, the "new" Libyan flag is the old banner of King Idris the First, overthrown in 1969.  At this point the term that comes to mind would rather be a counter-revolution.
On that hypothesis -- if only as a proposal for debate -- then things look a bit different.  Of course that doesn't mean that the insurgents who want to liquidate Moammer Kadhafi are all Western agents; many are surely sincere.  But so were many Chouans during the Vendée wars.  Many of them were massacred nonetheless -- sometimes blindly but necessarily in order to save the young revolution.
And when it comes to "massacres," the protégés of the Allied Powers don't seem to need many lessons, to say the least.  That applies in particular to the veritable pogroms that took place -- and may still be going on -- against civilians with black skin.  Presented as "regrettable errors" by Western media when they couldn't be totally ignored, they seem to have been much more widespread than what we have been shown.  Above all, they indicate a class racism, since, whether Libyans or immigrants, blacks make up the main ranks of what could be called in broad terms the working class, not exactly in the good graces of the insurgents, least of all in Cyrenaica.
In any case, the "protection of civilians" is not only a high point of hypocrisy on the part of Western leaders.  Above all it constitutes the pretext for intervention, absolutely contrary to the founding principle of the United Nations Charter: the sovereignty and equality before the law of each State.
It is this eminently progressive principle that Cuban, Venezuelan, and many other Latin American leaders rightly defend, to the chagrin of Ramonet.  The latter thus denounces their "huge historic error" in refusing to take the side of the rebels.  On the contrary, by adopting that position, they are making the greatest contribution imaginable to the social and political emancipation of peoples.  It is true that, when it comes to the idea of intervention, those Latin American leaders have been inoculated against it by the historic solicitude of the Yankees for their southern neighbors.
Caracas, Havana, and others are accused by Ramonet of practicing a Realpolitik by which States act according to their interests.  Thank goodness!  For the interest of Venezuela, Cuba, and other Latin American States (most particularly the progressive ones) is indeed to defend themselves against the "legalization" of intervention whose only aim is to justify imperialist powers minding other people's business.
Ignacio Ramonet praises UN Resolution 1973 which authorized the use of force against Tripoli.  He sees an extra dose of legitimacy for that text in the prior approval by the Arab League.  Strange way of looking at things: that organization, whose submission to Western leaders is no secret, had not up to then made a name for itself by its active devotion to the freedom of peoples (and of the Palestinian people in particular).  Dominated by big players as progressive as Saudi Arabia, it is an indisputable point of reference when it comes to promoting democracy. . .
Ramonet adds that "the Muslim powers that were hesitant at first, such as Turkey, came around to taking part in the operation."  Are we to understand that a Muslim power has a special legitimacy to bless the flight of Rafale and Mirage fighter-bombers?  That should make the Kurds happy.
Finally, to finish telling off Chavez, Castro, or Correa, Ramonet recalls that "many Latin American leaders had rightly denounced the passivity or complicity of the great Western democracies regarding the violations committed against civilian populations between 1970 and 1990 by military dictatorships in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay."
Let us recall what the author knows as well as anyone else: as for "passivity" or "complicity" of the "Western democracies," in reality it was at their direct instigation, and with their active cooperation, that the bloody coups were carried out.  But even so, nobody ever heard that at the time the democrats of those countries called for air raids on Santiago or commando raids on Buenos Aires.  It is by themselves -- and never from the outside -- that peoples gain their freedom.
Beyond the case of Libya, that is the point, the most essential, which deserves to be discussed among all those who adhere to the right of peoples to decide their own destiny -- what used to be called anti-imperialism.
Used to be?  In fact, it was so up until the fall of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact opened the way to the reconquest of the entire planet by capitalism, its dominations and its imperial rivalries.  And that left no other choice to countries except to align themselves with the canons of "human rights," the "rule of law," and the "market economy" -- three terms which have become synonymous -- or else find themselves under fire from the cannons of the planetary policemen shamelessly calling themselves the "international community."
By the way, an interesting scene took place in Brussels on the occasion of the European summit last March 24 and 25.  It was nearly one o'clock in the morning.  The French president rolled into the pressroom.  Questioned as to the bombing raids begun five days before, he rejoiced: "It's a historic moment (. . .) what is happening in Libya is creating jurisprudence (. . .) it is a major turning point in the foreign policy of France, Europe, and the world."
In reality, Nicolas Sarkozy revealed there what is probably the least visible but the most significant objective of this war.  That very morning, the special advisor of the UN Secretary General also described as "historic" the resolution putting into practice the "responsibility to protect" for the first time since the adoption of that fearsome principle in 2005.  Edward Luck added: "Perhaps our attack against Kadhafi (sic!) is a warning to other regimes."
Granted, when it comes to armed intervention against a sovereign State, the so-called "international community" is no beginner.  But it is the first time that the UN Security Council explicitly gave the green light, and that its secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, played an active role in unleashing hostilities.  The full implications of such a situation need to be weighed: the brutal challenge to the sovereignty of States has been legalized -- even if not legitimatized.  The dominant planetary oligarchies, whose final horizon is "world governance" without borders, have thereby scored a major point: interventionism ("preventive" at that, according to Mr. Luck) can henceforth be the rule.
This conception, which explicitly contradicts the United Nations Charter, is a time bomb: it undermines the very foundations on which it was written and could mean a veritable return to barbarism in international relations.
For the uncompromising defense of the principle of non-intervention does not stem from some narrow, archaic, fundamentalist cult, but primarily from a basic principle: it is up to each people alone to make the choices that condition its future.  Otherwise, the very notion of politics loses its meaning -- whatever dramatic paths it must sometimes face.
It is the exactly the same with intervention as with torture.  In principle, civilized people are against its use -- but someone can always be found to insist that "in extreme cases" one should be able to make an exception ("to avoid murderous attacks" was what they said during the Algerian "events"; to "avoid the massacre of civilians" is the justification today at the Elysée and elsewhere).  Now, evidence shows that, once one exception is granted, soon ten, then a hundred, will be allowed, for the sordid debate has been accepted that weighs the suffering inflicted on a tortured person against what may be gained from it, always presented in humanistic terms.  It is the same thing with respect for sovereignty: a single exception leads to eradication of the rule.  There is no -- not any! -- circumstance that justifies intervention.  Suppose that Nicolas Sarkozy pursued a policy totally contrary to the interests of his country and his people (absurd hypothesis, of course) -- that would in no way justify Libyan -- or Bengali, or Ghanaian -- aircraft dive-bombing the Champs Elysées.
And what is one to make of the statement that "The European Union has a specific responsibility.  Not only military.  It must think of the next stage of consolidation of the new democracies which emerge from such a nearby region"?  One can't help noticing that Ramonet echoes word for word the ambitions displayed by Brussels.  Leave aside the "not only military" which indicates, if words mean anything, that the EU would have grounds to intervene militarily as well.  But this "specific responsibility" which European leaders constantly claim to possess, who gave it to them?  A "benevolence" naturally attributed to a great power and its neighborhood?  Such is precisely the description of an empire, albeit in gestation.
It is hard to avoid thinking of the speech given in Strasbourg by the current president of the Republic in January 2007, when he was, while campaigning, seeking to confirm his commitment as a "convinced European."  On that occasion, he glorified "the shattered dream of Charlemagne and of the Holy Roman Empire, the Crusades, the great schism between Eastern and Western Christianity, the fallen glory of Louis XIV and Napoleon. . ."  Thereupon continued Nicolas Sarkozy: "Europe is today the only force capable of carrying forward a project of civilization."  He went on to conclude: "I want to be the president of a France which will bring the Mediterranean into the process of its reunification (sic!) after twelve centuries of division and painful conflicts (. . .).  America and China have already begun the conquest of Africa.  How long will Europe wait to build the Africa of tomorrow?  While Europe hesitates, others advance."
Not wanting to be left behind, Dominique Strauss-Kahn around the same time expressed his desire for a Europe stretching "from the cold ice of the Arctic in the North to the hot sands of the Sahara in the South (. . .) and that Europe, I believe, if it continues to exist, will have reconstituted the Mediterranean as an internal sea, and will have reconquered the space that the Romans, or Napoleon more recently, attempted to consolidate."  And by the way, the highest distinction bestowed by the EU was baptized the "Charlemagne Prize" -- a hint as to what European integration was from its origins and has never ceased to be: a project necessarily and essentially imperial and ultra-free-market.
The point then is not whether or not Colonel Kadhafi is an innocent choir boy exclusively concerned with the happiness of peoples, but rather what tomorrow's world will be like: the free choice of each people deciding its future, or the acceptance of intervention as the norm, no doubt dressed up as "human rights"?
For there is one obvious truth that should never be forgotten: intervention has never been, and will never be, anything other than the intervention of the strong in the affairs of the weak.  The respect for sovereignty in international relations is what the equal vote is to citizenship: certainly no absolute guarantee, far from it, but a substantial asset against the law of the jungle.  The latter is what could very well take over the world stage.  If all that seems too abstract, let us come back to the recent history of Libya.  After years of being subjected to embargo and treated as a pariah, Colonel Kadhafi undertook the rapprochement mentioned above with the West, which notably took the form in December 2003 of an official renunciation of any nuclear arms program in exchange for guarantees of non-aggression promised specifically by Washington.  Eight years later, there is no getting around the fact that that commitment lasted only up until the day when they felt they now had reasons to trample it under foot.  Suddenly, in the four corners of the earth everyone can measure the worth of the word given by the powerful and just how much they value the commitments they have made.  The leaders of the DPRK (North Korea) thus publicly congratulated themselves for not having given in to pressure to abandon their nuclear program.  They were right.  It would be logical to draw the obvious conclusions in Teheran, in Caracas, in Minsk, and it many other capitals.  It would be perfectly legitimate.
Barely a few months before Libya, there was Ivory Coast -- another point of pride for Sarkozy; already the UN Security Council gave its blessing to gunboat diplomacy, on the sole pretext of allegations of electoral irregularities -- a first!
And already the Westerners are polishing up their (military and ideological) weapons for their next adventures.  Thus Paddy Ashdown, who notably spent four years as EU High Representative in Bosnia-Herzegovina, confided to the Times that from now on we should adopt and get used to the "Libyan model" of intervention, in contrast to the "Iraqi model" of massive invasion, which showed its inadequacies.
For his part, the NATO Secretary General made a plea on September 5 for the Europeans to pool better their military means in this period of budgetary restriction.  For Anders Fogh Rasmussen, "as Libya proved, we can't know where the next crisis will come, but it will come."  At least that much is clear.
That being the case, does it really make any sense to analyze the Syrian crisis as the uprising of a people against the "tyrant" Bashar al-Assad?  On the contrary, one may be forgiven for thinking that he is just the next on the hit list of Western governments.  In that case, is there really nothing more urgent to do, even in terms of the cause of emancipation of peoples, than to align oneself with the latter, even unintentionally?
As for the positions taken by Ignacio Ramonet, one will not insult him by assimilating him to the "left" which has long since given up the memory of struggles.  But one is obliged to note that in this case he finds himself swept along with the latter which unhesitatingly chose its side in the Libyan affair.  That once again illustrates the sad paradox of our era: the forces of globalized capitalism and reinvigorated imperialism henceforth draw their essential ideological ammunition from "the left" -- from "human rights" to immigration, from ecology to globalism (which is the exact opposite of internationalism).  But that is another debate.
Or is it?

Occupy Wall Street: Who Wants to Hijack the Movement?

By Webster G. Tarpley, Ph.D.
TARPLEY.net October 7, 2011

Media spokesmen for the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations claimed that their operation is totally transparent, with everything subject to democratic discussion in a general assembly of all comers. But eyewitness reports from experienced observers on the ground in lower Manhattan indicate a much different reality behind these bland assurances. Forces appeared to be at work behind the scenes to manipulate the protest movement into a posture of supporting the presidential candidacy of Wall Street puppet Obama.
Eyewitness observers suggest that the deliberations of the general assembly are largely a diversion, and that real power is being increasingly concentrated in the hands of about 20 mysterious and anonymous individuals who appear to make up a kind of covert steering committee that pulls the strings on the general assembly, or else goes around it completely. The members of this cadre of mysterious operatives are not as young as the average demonstrator. The secret leadership is made up of people ranging in age from 25 to over 40, with the older ones occupying the key posts. Many of them appear to be active duty or recently retired military.

A Covert Steering Committee Behind the Scenes?

Attempts to ascertain the names of the behind-the-scenes leaders are met with stonewalling. When pressed to reveal her identity, one female leader gave her name as “Mary MIA.” Another gave his name as “Tony POW.”
If the leaders of OWS want to be transparent, let them make public at least the full names of the people who are actually running the show. No one wants to join a movement with anonymous leaders.
Observers have noticed that almost all of the likely members of the secret steering committee disappear from view between 4 and 6 p.m. each afternoon, right before the opening of the general assembly, for which they then re-appear. It is assumed that they are attending a closed-door meeting, but the general assembly is not officially informed of this fact.

Strange Bedfellows

Two individuals who appear to belong to the higher levels of the pecking order in Zuccotti Park are pictured above. The one on the left calls himself “Brendan.” When newspaper correspondents and other media representatives arrive, he is often the one who handles relations with them. “Brendan” looks old enough to be the father of many of the demonstrators.
The person pictured above on the right is a frequent speaker in the general assembly. He also has a role in relations with the press. According to one protester, he may have connections to the US military, but this has not been confirmed. Is his do-rag or bandana a fashion statement, or something else?
Who are these people? Who appointed them? To whom are they accountable?

Who Invited Michael Moore?

The general assembly is supposed to approve all major decisions. In reality, it appears to be occupied with endless deliberations about trivia while the really big decisions are being made someplace else. A case in point are the invitations which have obviously been extended to a whole series of discredited left liberal figures, many of them deeply implicated in inflicting the Obama presidency and continued Wall Street rule on our nation. Michael Moore, Naomi Klein, Mike Myers, and left-IMF ideologue Joseph Stiglitz have all appeared, and a visit by Noam Chomsky, a devoted supporter of the Bush theory of terrorism, is reportedly in the works. Eyewitnesses have reported that most demonstrators were not happy with the presence of the millionaire Michael Moore, who was using the demonstrations as props for his usual routine of self-promotion. But these objections carried no weight. Regular participants in the general assembly report that they were never consulted about whether to invite these left liberals. It is therefore a good guess that the invitations were actually issued by the secret steering committee. The general idea is once again to reduce the protest movement to a mere auxiliary in the effort to get Obama reelected.

The Consensus Straitjacket

The members of the secret steering committee have taken a leading role in imposing the unwieldy and time-consuming formalism of always reaching a consensus in the general assembly, meaning that any significant opposition can block the implementation of urgent actions. A simple up or down majority vote is not enough. (The last governing assembly of any major nation to give each member a veto over the actions of the whole body was the aristocratic Polish Diet of the 18th century, which was so dysfunctional that it led to Poland being obliterated from the map of Europe – not an example to be imitated.)
The consensus method provides immense comfort to the predatory speculators of Wall Street, since it virtually guarantees that no potent and controversial strategy to break the power of finance capital can emerge. Indeed, it guarantees that absolutely nothing will be able to emerge in an emergency after a rapid turn in the overall situation. The US Congress is paralyzed by a minority, but the consensus rules of the general assembly mean that it can be paralyzed by a tiny clique bent on sabotage. In the background, the covert steering committee is busy creating a series of faits accomplis.
The deliberations of the general assembly are one big filibuster. On October 4, much of the session was taken up with an agonized discussion of whether to buy or knit and sew sleeping bags as the nights became colder. Right-wing commentators hostile to the protests had a field day using this grotesque scene to mock the entire movement.
Those who run the General assembly sessions are known as facilitators. The relation of these facilitators to the secret steering committee is being investigated.

The OWS Declaration: Not One Concrete Demand for Americans

While the General assembly is occupied with questions like what to order for lunch as part of the shipments of free food that mysteriously appear at the demonstration site, the vital issue of program is left to a subcommittee. On October 5, the Olbermann evening news featured a reading of the Occupy Wall Street Declaration, written by protesters Ryan Hoffman and Lex Rendon. This document does not offer an analysis of the current economic crisis. Rather, it represents a laundry list of complaints, many valid and some spurious. Most important, this document contains not one concrete demand, measure, or program point on which the protesters are willing to pledge that they will be fighting for the interests of the American people. In that sense, it is a document of moral and intellectual impotence. It whines and complains, but it will do nothing to combat the widespread suspicion of the OWS movement felt in many quarters because of the Soros endorsement.
Economic demands are absolutely vital. The movement needs to offer specific solutions for the grave abuses and economic tragedies which are plaguing working people. These demands acquire a material power as they gain mass support. To get support from the inner-city ghetto, from the farm belt, from women, from labor, from the elderly, their vital concerns must be directly addressed. These groups absolutely do not need more analysis telling them how bad things are. They already know that. They need to see a social force which is ready to take leadership in accomplishing radical reforms -or else the revolution, as the case may be.

Student Loan Amnesty Now Paid for by 1% Wall Street Sales Tax

One obvious demand which needs to be included is an immediate amnesty or cancellation of all outstanding student loans. The zombie banks which have been bailed out by the United States government can and should eat their part of the $1 trillion which will have to be written off. The loans guaranteed by the government can be offset by new tax income from a 1% Wall Street sales tax on all financial turnover, including stocks, bonds, and derivatives. Estimates of the additional revenue from a Wall Street sales tax of this type start in the hundreds of billions of dollars and go into the trillions. The proceeds could be split between the federal government and the states, for the purposes of maintaining the social safety net and vital public services. Ordinary people pay sales tax, while bankers pay nothing. One bright spot in the demonstrations has been the presence of the nurses’ union, which has been militantly advocating just such a Tobin tax or financial transactions tax. Student loan amnesty now paid for by a 1% Wall St sales tax is a demand which could blow the lid off US politics once and for all.
Economic program is a science. It requires the mastery of many fields. Serious, intelligent people need to put their gifts to work mastering the science of economic program as part of their social responsibility to the American people.

The Indignados of Madrid: Europe’s Biggest Failures

According to reliable reports, the consensus method was imposed via the steering committee preparing for the demonstrations during the summer months. Individuals claiming to be students from Spain and Greece arrived and joined the steering committee, where they advocated the crippling consensus method. They pointed to the general assemblies held by the indignados of Madrid, a movement of youthful protesters concerned about austerity measures, youth unemployment, the excessive power of bankers, and economic injustice. But, even compared with Tunis, Cairo, Athens, and Reykjavík, the Madrid indignados must be judged as the biggest failure of them all, because of their total inability to oust the “socialist” IMF agent Zapatero, the enforcer of genocidal austerity demanded by the banks, or to block any of the austerity cuts. The indignados had no positive impact whatsoever on Spanish politics. Why imitate failure? This is the side of the current protests which Wall Street predator George Soros was happy to endorse this week.

A New International Otpor?

Observers are reminded of Otpor, the organization created by the CIA and the National Endowment for Democracy for the purpose of overthrowing the Serbian strongman Milosevic in 2000. After that color revolution had occurred, the leaders of Otpor turned their experience into an immensely lucrative consultancy under which they were assigned by the CIA and the NED to Ukraine, Georgia, Lebanon, and Egypt to train the operatives that would overthrow national leaders which the US wanted to get rid of. Have indignados veterans opened a new counterinsurgency franchise of this kind?

The “Theoretician”: Anarchist Peter Gelderloos, Fetishist of Consensus

Last night Occupy Wall Street spokesman Matthew Swaye appeared on the Ed Show of MSNBC, and announced that the main theoretician of the consensus straitjacket is anarchist Peter Gelderloos, author of the book Consensus. Swaye praised the “intricate process” of the general assemblies, where votes are expressed by thumbs up or thumbs down. Gelderloos, who is almost unknown in the United States, was arrested in Spain in 2007, and during his trial became a sort of minor celebrity in certain circles there. This may explain why the indignados leaders were indoctrinated with his belief structure. Gelderloos’s system is a Procrustean bed on which not many in their right mind will be willing to lie down.
Television appearances by protesters Kelly Heresy, Tyler Combelic, Ryan Hoffman, Lex Rendon and Swaye in recent days all have one common characteristic – their absolute inability to formulate a single demand or program which would speak to the urgent needs of the broader American public. Instead, many of them used the few precious minutes they had extolling the virtues of the imbecilic consensus model as the basis for some future Utopia. Hard-pressed working people do not have time for these pipe dreams. American working people urgently need help in finding a job, in blocking a foreclosure, in obtaining health care, and in getting out from under the crushing burden of student loans. Who chose these spokespersons?
So far, the current Wall Street protests have offered these embattled Americans virtually nothing but an unfulfilled promissory note.
Sam Seder, a former broadcaster for the failed Air America network and Obama backer, has argued that the movement should never come up with a program of concrete demands. This is the choice that would suit Obama. Unless and until the protest movement tells the American people what it is willing to fight for on their behalf, it risks becoming a mere collection of roustabouts for the Obama reelection campaign.
The stakes are much too high to let this happen. If this movement fails, fascism may be much closer than many people think. It must succeed, and to succeed it immediately requires a series of intelligible goals.

European Parliament chief blows shofar

From The Ugly Truth:

ed note–CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE fellow earthlings the howling and gnashing of teeth taking place if any western leader were to do something similar, but along Islamic lines? THE SHRIEKING WOULD BE DEAFENING. However, pay homage to the Jews’ religion with something like this, and not a peep of protest, and this AT A TIME WHEN THE WEST IS IN ITS DEATH THROES ECONOMICALLY, MILITARILY, CULTURALLY AND IN EVERY OTHER FASHION AS A RESULT OF DISPROPORTINATE JEWISH INFLUENCE OVER WESTERN AFFAIRS.

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek opened the Jewish New Year celebrations this week with the exhibition “Polin: Thousand Years of Jews in Poland” by the Polish Museum of the History of Polish Jews (MHPJ) under the Patronage of Polish Presidency of the European Council.

The reception was held at the European Parliament and organized by the European Jewish Union (EJU), the European Jewish Community Centre (EJCC) and the European Jewish Public Affairs (EJPA) in Brussels.

Joined by Ukrainian philanthropist Vadim Rabinovitch, EJU Vice-President, Rabbi Gershon M. Garelik, EJCC founder and Tomer Orni, EJU CEO, Rabbi Levi Matusof presented a golden plated shofar to the European Parliament President wishing him that “the Sound of Europe should be heard loud and clear”, he ironically suggested to give it a try.

In front of an acclaimed joyful crowd of over 600, including some 50 members of the EP and diplomats from 16 countries, the president of the European Parliament presented his shofar blowing skills.

Referring to Rosh Hashana as a time for reflection on the past, Buzek said: “It is also a time of optimism for the year to come. Last year saw many changes in the world. Especially in the Middle East where the Arab Spring has brought a new hope – that peace can finally be achieve in the region.”

He added that “real stability comes from democracy; and only democracies can guarantee a lasting peace.”

Nehama Tawil, EJCC co-director in her opening remarks thanked the President for hosting this event. “This moment inspires much Hope to us. We are proud to belong to a Europe where all cultures have a respectful platform, not only to exercise their rights but also to share their joyous holidays with the extended European family.”

On behalf of EJU’s President Igor Kholomoisky, its CEO Tomer Orni announced the launching of Jewish New 1, a 24-hour worldwide broadcast satellite TV channel and the scheduled elections in October for the European Jewish Parliament, sole democratically elected Jewish representative body in Europe.

Corinne Evens, president of the European Association for the Polish Museum, urged the European community to support the museum and to turn it into one of the greatest museums of the world.

She thanked the Polish authorities and the EP president and former Polish prime minister for their partnership and engagement in this educative €21 million ($28 million) project to see light in 2015.

His Excellency Jan Tombinsky, ambassador of Poland to the EU and representative of the Polish Presidency to the EU, praised the great work of the Polish Museum and thanked the Jewish communities in Europe and in the world for helping the Museum keeping alive the memory of the History of Polish Jews who left a strong mark in the roots of the country.

To conclude the ceremony, Rabbi Avi Tawil, EJCC Director blew the shofar, traditionally the main symbol of the Jewish New Year.

Evil Occupies Wall Street?

From The Daily Bell
... A vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert ...
What rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
– The Second Coming/WB Yeats

Dominant Social Theme: There is to be a worldwide revolution on October 15th! Be there or be square.

Free-Market Analysis: Today, we hear the heavy tread of the "rough beast" and we see for ourselves the progress of a cold-blooded anti-freedom movement rising in front of our disbelieving eyes.

What proximate cause drives this revelation? On October 15th there is to be a "worldwide demonstration for global change." Just like that. (And by the way, Oct. 15th is the day of Wall Street's second largest meltdown ever, in 2008). We wonder if the US State department knows about this. Along with the CIA, the State dept. has supported numerous "youth movements" via AYM worldwide.

The announcement of this global protest comes to us courtesy of 15october.net, and while there is seemingly no direct connection between "15October" and Occupy Wall Street, somehow we're sure there is. The 15October site carries examples of stickers and posters. One poster reads "Legally camp on Wall Street and remain together to be strong."

Yes, increasingly, this seems a virulent, deliberate, calculated operation. The 15October rhetoric is deliberately internationalist. "United for Global Change." Say what? Did we miss something? When did these demos morph into an international movement for "global change" and a "better place to live for all." What the hell does that mean?

Meanwhile, libertarian elements of Occupy Wall Street have been purposefully deemphasized. Now the mainstream media covers these demos as if they were a credible explosion of popular anger. A populist movement is being created, and quite deliberately.

There are obviously plenty of good people involved in the larger Occupy Wall Street movement. A good many, no doubt, are libertarians, not socialists or upper-rank, fat-cat unionists. A good many believe in freedom, not Marxist rhetoric.

But the reality doesn't matter. Despite the resolute insistence that the movement has no leaders, it is evidently and obviously being manipulated at the top, and most cleverly. More and more it seems a promotion, a sub dominant social theme of the Anglosphere banking families that are trying to impose world government – and are racing to do so before the Internet Reformation blows up their 300-year-old conspiracy.

These current demonstrations started "small," of course, as they must. But then they blew up. Spontaneously! Suddenly there were cases of police abuse. Then, inexplicably, the demonstrators were led from sidewalks onto the Brooklyn Bridge and arrested. And now the unions are involved. From all over America. And soon from all over the world. The mechanisms seem clearly visible.

We're fully aware of the tricks by now, how they seem to implement what we have called directed history. Nothing has to be real, in fact, they just need a pretext. First some demonstrators, then a worldwide protest and resultant media attention. October is a bad month, so throw in a stock market crash, a looming depression, food shortages and unemployment lines.

Now top honchos at the IMF announce that the only thing that can save the planet is a worldwide currency. Fortunately, they have one – special drawing rights (SDRs) – a basket of currencies that can serve as the new "money." Time to replace the dollar-reserve system?

Control the mainstream media, control the money, control legislatures around the world and you can create any version of history you choose. You can manufacture a crisis and then implement a solution – and you can do it independently of the will of billions. Greek citizens have been protesting austerity for months, but it hasn't made any difference. Their legislature exists in a parallel elitist universe.

We thank feedbacker "concernedforfreedoms" for sending us a series of links yesterday that seem to show this plan quite clearly. You can see his feedback within the article queue "Occupy Wall Street Turns into 1930s Populism." It is time-stamped 4:58 PM.

We watched a video he/she linked to (and some related ones). All very slick. Amazingly professional. And the iconography? Very well produced, given the "spontaneous" nature of what is supposedly occurring. Say, where did all this come from? It's almost like a ... campaign, one that's been in the works for months or even years.

Is there a pattern? It's the DB's purpose to analyze the memes of the elite. And these demos fit right into larger patterns we've observed in the past. First, theoretically anyway, destabilize Western economies and make people angry, then start to create agitation for change. Ensure that the change is aimed at the private sector – the banks and businesses that supposedly caused the current economic crisis.

Finally, set up phony agitation that will lead to deep, Draconian legislation and even a world currency. This is the blueprint that seems to have worked in the 1930s to advance elite control when the first wave of regulatory fascism hit the books in the US (and then went worldwide) with the creation of the dysfunctional SEC, NASD, "self-regulatory organizations, etc." – and finally the confiscation of gold.
is there any reason to think that Western elites that want world government won't repeat this? They rarely break new ground. They stick to what works. And their machinations are fairly visible in this era of the Internet. Are they playing everyone else for dupes? Protesters included?

It seems to be happening fast! Like a speeded-up movie reel. In fact, the Internet has thoroughly exposed what we consider to be fear-based promotions and efforts to redirect the wealth and power of Western middle classes to their horrible globalist institutions. This is one reason they're likely in a hurry. Their plans are failing, perhaps. Increasingly these co-opted Wall Street demos seem like another step in a certain direction.

Maybe they won't win, not in the long run anyway. We'd like to think not. No world government for you! But it's not going to be an easy struggle if it's joined more earnestly. It's going to be long and bloody. We figure they'll end up taking a step back. But we've seen they don't do it easily.
See, they get angry when they're exposed ... and challenged. We've seen that in the past couple of years as the truth-telling of the Internet Reformation has put more and more pressure on them. The peasants are not to question the masters of the universe, much less begin to comprehend the lies of directed history. It's not their place.

Conclusion: Again, we could be wrong. We hope we are. But it's a down day. All the elves are sniveling. Our 100-elf conference table is a just a sea of woe. We still won't let them out for lunch. Its hour come round at last ...

Editor's Note (Daily Bell): Interesting report from Webster G. Tarpley of alternative webblog Tarpley.net: Occupy Wall Street: Who Wants to Hijack the Movement? ... Many of them appear to be active duty or recently retired military ...

Muammar Ghadafi addresses Libyans and World as Liberation gains Momentum

Muammar Ghadafi - Encouraging Libyans and a Stern Warning to World Leaders
Yesterday evening Muammar Ghadafi addressed the People of Libya and the Political Leaders of the World. While encouraging the Libyan People to continue their defiance against the aggression, Ghadafi issued a stern warning to the nations that recognized the Transitional national Counsel, saying that a Transitional National Counsel can appear in any country, meaning any country on the Anglo American Empires list for future subversions. The tragic humanitarian situation continues and worsens, and civilian casualties mount. In spite of the relentless attacks, more and more of Libya is liberated while TNC “rebels” and special operations troops from the US, Qatar and other register heavy casualties.

Yesterday Muammar Ghadafi addressed the Libyan People as well as political leaders throughout the world. For the people of Libya it was an encouragement to continue resisting, emphasizing that the people should be prepared to endure sacrifices until the NATO aggression and attempted colonization is defeated. In true spirit of the Libyan culture, he said that “honorable people can not be defeated”,  meaning those fighting for a just cause. Ghadafi also stressed the point that the TNC is intrinsically weak because it is split. One more proof of this split came yesterday, when a squad of the Belhadj lead Tripoli Military Counsel aka LIFG made a failed attempt to assassinate Mahmud Jibril. Jibril survived the attempt unharmed, but seven of his body guards were killed. Ghadafi encouraged the Libyan people to be bold, to go out into the streets and peacefully protest against the TNC and it´s abuse of the Libyan people and the country as a whole. After Ghadafi´s address, there were spontaneous demonstrations with  people waving green flags and demanding the TNC to step down in Tripoli, Bengazi, Tobruk, Bani Walid, Sheba and other cities.
Muammar Ghadafi also issued a stern warning to world leaders and countries that have recognized the TNC, saying: ” There will be transitional national counsels imposed upon you and one by one you shall fall“. Ghadafi´s warning should be not only understood in the light of the words of maverick politicians like US Senator John McCain, who recently encouraged the people of Moscow to follow “the Libyan example”. It must also be seen in the light of evidence that clearly demonstrates the US American strategies of unconventional warfare, as in the recent article “The National Counsel of Syria and US Unconventional Warfare
The Humanitarian situation in Sirte continues to be catastrophic, and so far, non of the international aid organizations has delivered most urgently needed medicines, hospital supplies, or food, while small NGO´s and initiatives from Medical Doctors, Psychologists and volunteer aid workers fail to manifest because they, and the supplies they could provide have no channels for safely entering the country.
In spite of the humanitarian catastrophe, the will to resist against the occupiers among Libyans is unbroken and increasing daily as the full implications of the atrocities committed by NATO, NATO Allies like Qatar, and their rag tack army of mercenaries from various Al Qaeda factions, from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and numerous other locations become inescapable for even those who dreamed of singing tomorrows when the Arab Fall still was an Arab Spring.
The question is, why are non of the nations that refuse to recognize the TNC “demanding” the urgent deployment of observers and help organizing the humanitarian relief that would manifest if only there was a safe way in. The editor of nsnbc knows of several of such initiatives, and would facilitate contacts between those who want and can provide much needed aid, and diplomats who would contact us, who would be willing to step up for ending the humanitarian catastrophe.
Murdere, General Younis
The military situation on the ground is is as chaotic on the side of the TNC, as is the Transitional national Counsel itself. After the recent walk out of 80 – 90 % of it´s members, a failed attempt on Abdelhakim Belhadj´s life, and yesterdays failed attempt to assassinate Mahmud Jibril, not to speak of the assassination of General Younis, that caused heavy clashes between TNC factions in Bengazi yesterday, the Libyan Military, Tribal Militia, Popular Liberation and International Military Support are achieving significant victories.
After the recent attack on Sirte that was repelled, the city is again solidly fortified, and so much so, that there are increasing numbers of reports that Sirte soon can deploy units to help liberate other parts of Libya. Sirte is regularly bombed from both NATO planes, and yesterday nsnbc received confirmed reports of bombings from French Air Force Drones that are build in Israel. Yesterday numerous civilians were killed when competing rebel factions clashed in Misurata.
82nd Airborne at Ras Lanuf - Over 380 Casualties
In Bengazi 140 fighters of Al Qaeda factions were killed as a revenge for the murder of General Younis, and after tribal elders recently received video evidence of 200 other murders committed by Al Qaeda Commandos in Bengazi. Also in Bengazi, Libyan Forces stormed an ammunition warehouse of the military from Qatar capturing one officer and 40 troops. After the recent attack on a detachment from the 82nd Airborne at Ras Lanuf that was deployed for securing an oil refinery and pipelines, the casualty number has been published. Over 380 killed soldiers and some were taken prisoners. The 82nd Airborne is based at Ft. Bragg North Carolina. Yesterday in Saba the TNC, and most probably the CIA suffered a heavy defeat when Libyan Forces shot down a Russian made Illushin Transport plane with 200 foreign fighters on board. There are no survivors. The people of Baydah have risen up and demanded the TNC to leave, explaining that they have seen enough of the TNC´s atrocities. In Tobruk, fighting against the TNC continues. Both in Tobruk and Adjdabiyah rebel checkpoints and installations were attacked. The entire province of Jufrah is liberated.
The war in Libya will not end before Libya is liberated from the foreign invasion. It already has begun to involve other North African Nations, whose tribes are perceiving the war on Libya as a war of aggression and colonization of Northern Africa. Even if the war would end soon, nothing would return to “normal”.  While infrastructure can be rebuild, while many wounds can heal, the psychological scars of the children of Libya are likely to determine it´s future developments for decades to come. On a positive note, many African politicians as well as Tribal Elders are slowly but surely becoming acutely aware of their own vulnerability in the presence of an empire that will not relent, unless it is met with resistance.
